Working with QuickBooks from an iPad with qBooks

When I’m traveling I prefer to take my iPad to work from remote locations, rather than a phone (too small for my eyes and fat fingers) or a laptop (to bulky to get through airport security). But how do I work with my QuickBooks file when I’m on the road? Let’s take a look at a new iPad app that has a lot of potential to help with this task – qBooks.

There are many different ways to access your QuickBooks desktop data from an iPad when you are out of the office. To list just a few:

  • You can use a remote access tool like LogMeIn Ignition (there are several options here). To do this you must leave the “home computer” on all the time, and nobody else can be using it. Response time may be slow.
  • You can use a QuickBooks Hosting company to host your QuickBooks installation, and then you can access from your web browser. There are several companies that do this, such as Cloud9. This is more expensive than just having it on your desktop system, though, and might not make sense if you don’t need web access all the time.
  • How about QuickBooks Online? That is a great option, but note that this is a very different product than QuickBooks on your desktop, and it might not provide you with the features you need. This also is accessed via a web browser.
  • You can use a remote access product like QuickBooks Connect (and QuickBooks Mobile as an app). You may incur monthly fees to use this, and this product is limited to a small number of functions at this time.

Now we can add qBooks to that list. This is an app for your iPad that provides a wide variety of functions that allow you to work with your QuickBooks desktop database from your iPad easily. This app has the advantage of working with your normal Desktop installation, while being a native iPad app.

I’ll review version 1.00, which has been released recently.

How Does It Work?

To use qBooks you will set up a “syncing” tool on your Windows desktop, where you have QuickBooks running. qBooks uses its own syncing tool, rather than using the QuickBooks “Sync Manager”. I think that this is a good idea, as Intuit’s Sync Manager is not my favorite Intuit invention. I find it to be unreliable and cantankerous.

This syncing tool, “OpCenter”, will copy your QuickBooks company file to a “cloud” based server where it is available to your iPad. Syncing can be set up to occur periodically, at an interval from one to five hours depending on your settings. You can also force a sync at any time. The initial sync may take awhile as it will be uploading a large amount of data, but any subsequent sync will be faster as it only has to upload new or changed records.

Syncing your data

Note that you might not have ALL of your data synchronized, just the last 6 to 18 months (depending on how you set this up).

Each time that you start the app on your iPad the data in the cloud server will be synchronized with the data on your iPad. This is a bidirectional sync. As I understand it, after syncing you have a copy of the data on your iPad, so that you can work with it without having to be online all of the time. When you are able to connect again the data will be synchronized. This is a very good feature.

When your data sync is done, you see the initial product screen. Scrolling down the left you see the types of list records and transactions that you can work with. At this time this is heavily oriented towards the sales side of things.

Navigation is fairly straight forward – tap on a record or transaction to open it, look for buttons in the upper portion of the screen to add records (the “+” symbol), save your work and so forth.

Let’s look at editing a list record and adding a transaction.

I’ll tap on Academy Training Institute in the Customers list, to see the customer record and a list of transactions (called “Instruments” in qBooks) for that customer.

Clicking on the green Edit button shows me the information that I can work with for this customer.

As you can see, this is not a complete set of the data that you can find in QuickBooks. The most critical information is there, but this isn’t everything.

If you edit information here and save it, the changes will be sent back to your desktop during the next data sync.

This is a common example of what you will see with list records. Much of the important information is shown, but you don’t have access to ALL of the data that you see in QuickBooks.

Adding a Transaction

This is one of the most important features of a product like this, in my mind – the ability to add transactions such as invoices and sales orders. Let’s take a look at adding an invoice.

In the new invoice window you will select the customer name and other features by tapping on the field next to each label.

qBooks does a good job on bringing over the supporting lists for these fields, such as the ship method, terms and sales rep.

Tapping on the Add Item field opens the item list. This list is not your complete item list from QuickBooks. It doesn’t include sales tax items or other charge items, for example. This may be a limit for some people.

If you tap on an item you can add it to the invoice and set the quantity, as well as modifying the description. You cannot control the taxable settings in this window.

When you are done you will be given the option to email the invoice. This feature works very smoothly and quickly. Here’s what it looks like:

However, look at the totals for this invoice. Going back to QuickBooks I can see that the invoice has been saved, but it doesn’t match what I see in qBooks. QuickBooks saved this as a taxable invoice, where qBooks created it without tax. Note that this should have been a taxable invoice because the customer has a default tax rate set up.

Now, after the next sync back to the iPad, you see that the amount has been updated to include the sales tax. However, you will also note that the correct amounts aren’t showing, the program is rounding rates and amounts to the nearest dollar.


At first I thought that this was a major bug in the program, but after commenting this via email with Tech Support , I was directed to the iPad Settings app:

Turning the Show cents preference to “On” resolves this problem and the invoice shows the correct amount. I wish that this had been enabled by default, but at least that was easy to change!

It is important to note that newly added invoices won’t show up in the customer list in qBooks until you have completed the sync cycle – sending the transaction to OpCenter, having QuickBooks on your desktop retrieve it from OpCenter and then sending it back, and then having your iPad retrieve it back from OpCenter.

Pricing and Options

Pricing for this product was a bit confusing at first, but once I understood it I was amazed. Some of the odd policies here have to do with how Apple controls pricing of things in the App Center.

You start off by buying the product in the App Center for $0.99. This gets you a demo version, essentially. It did seem a bit odd to me, buying the demo? But, for $0.99, I can’t complain too much. This lets you see the product on your iPad and play with it, but the data you are using is a dummy set of data.

Then you can register the product for no charge, and you are given the option to download the OpCenter syncing tool on your Windows desktop. Install this and then sync your database with the OpCenter server. I recommend that you pay careful attention to the installation steps that they outline for you on their web site – if you miss a step you may have to start over. This wasn’t entirely convenient, you have to uninstall the product and erase a file and then reinstall.

Once you have the sync tool set up your own QuickBooks company data is uploaded to your iPad. This allows you to see SOME of your real data, so that you can see how the sync works. You can’t see the details of all of your data, just the first 10 records. You can use those first ten records to actually view and add transactions. This is, essentially, a more advanced demo with your own data.

If you are convinced that this is the tool for you there are two “in product” purchases you can make:

  • $24.99 for a View function, which will let you see all of your data, but not sync data back to your desktop.
  • $49.99 for a Write function, which provides you with full access to the supported features. You can view data, you can add transactions, you can edit records. This includes the View function, you don’t have to purchase both.

Note that this is a one time purchase. No monthly “server” fees for the syncing tool, no other charges. That is an incredible deal! Access to all of the functions for a total of $59.98, and not recurring charges for the “cloud” based sync server.

The product supports the U.S. Windows desktop versions of QuickBooks Pro, Premier and Enterprise from 2006 through 2012, as well as the Australian version (which supports VAT transactions). Oddly enough, not the Canadian or UK versions.

Is Your Data Secure?

You should always be very concerned about the security of your data any time you are using a “cloud” based system. There are two main aspects to this, protection from data loss and protection from illegal access to your data. Based on what the qBooks people say, neither of these issues are a problem.

Data loss? The primary data store is still your QuickBooks desktop database. As long as you have proper backups of your local QuickBooks company file you are in good shape. qBooks isn’t the main receptacle of your data.

Data Security? According to the qBooks folks they are using a very secure and encrypted system. I can’t really confirm that but it sounds like they have done this correctly. In addition, and this may be even more valuable – the “sync” process is only storing evennt and error logs, and only the latest set of data to be synchronized is moving through their system. Unlike Intuit QuickBooks Connect, there isn’t a complete copy of your company data in their server. That is an important difference, and adds a layer of security.

Does It Work?

Ah, that is always the tough part. Does this work? I’ve pointed out a few of the issues that I ran into, and there are a few more I’ve stumbled across.

  • Sales tax is not included in the order until you sync the order to QuickBooks and back. This is a problem since you are asked to email the order before the sync takes place. You don’t have to send that invoice before sales tax is created – once syncing is done then you have an option to email it again. However, it is too easy to send the invoice off before tax is added, and if you haven’t synced your data (if you are offline, for example) then you can’t see the tax amount.
  • “Cents” display is turned off by default. Not a big deal, you can enable this preference, but it can be very confusing until you find this.
  • The Customer list only shows the higher level customer record – you can’t see “jobs”. This makes it difficult to see invoices for a job in some places, such as in the customer list (you can see jobs when creating a transaction like an invoice). This was a problem – if I have an invoice for a job, when I look at the customer list I can’t see that invoice. I can find it in the invoice list, but that isn’t the first place you look and it isn’t the easiest to use if you are trying to look up an invoice for a customer.
  • You are limited to one company file on a QuickBooks computer system. If you work with multiple company files you can’t use this product for more than one QuickBooks company file at a particular site.
  • You don’t have access to all of the data fields in your records. For example, you can create an inventory assembly item, but you can’t create the Bill of Materials for that item. You can’t set the taxable status of an item in the item list, or in an invoice. You can’t add an “other charge” item to an invoice. There are a number of examples of this kind of shortcoming.
  • Installation is a bit rough, and there are security features that are missing. I don’t like downloading an “msi” file to install a product on Windows – my Windows 7 system gave me many different security warnings. The product also isn’t “signed” so QuickBooks warns you when you connect. These aren’t deal breakers – as long as you know that you are downloading a product from a trusted source. However, they are issues that aren’t that difficult to resolve by a software developer, and it looks a bit sloppy to me.
  • I definitely don’t like the location that the software is installed in the computer – it creates folders in the root folder instead of the proper location. This is definitely a no-no in modern Windows software development practices.
  • There are a few bugs here and there where I couldn’t always get some dropdown lists to work unless I tapped on other fields, and I’m still investigating a situation where invoices don’t always seem to show the proper totals.

On the other hand, let’s look at the positives here.

  • The OpCenter sync tool is not a new program itself, it has been around for at least a couple of years in use with some other products by this company.
  • I am very impressed with how well the sync manager tool works. It was smooth and the setup process was done very well. Particularly when you compare this with Intuit’s Sync Manager (although Intuit Sync Manager allows you to sync multiple company files on one machine).
  • The breadth of data that qBooks is working with is significantly wider than what Intuit provides currently with QuickBooks Connect. Intuit will certainly be adding new features to QuickBooks Connect, but it looks like qBooks is ahead of the game here.
  • This is a native iPad app, rather than trying to work through a web browser. This provides you with a fast and easy to use interface. It also lets you work if you are not connected to the Internet (and that feature seems to work very well). In my mind a native app almost always provides you with a better user experience than a web app.
  • Tech Support seems to be fairly fast, and it is free. I haven’t used this much – I only made one call when I messed up the installation and I was able to get hold of someone immediately. I also was able to get support via email for several of the questions (such as the “cents” setting). The product (and their web site) has an extensive array of video tutorials that provide fast answers to common questions.
  • The price is incredibly low, particularly since you don’t have to pay a monthly access fee.

I didn’t get into other aspects of the product, such as payment processing and expenses, so I can’t comment much on those at this time. This is an area that doesn’t seem to be as well developed as the sales side. And, no inventory management (other than sales). This is not a complete QuickBooks product, but it is a good start.

This is version 1.0, so it isn’t surprising to me that there are some rough edges. The problems that I’ve come across so far should be easy to fix in the short term. In fact, the developer tells me that version 1.1 is already going through the approval/release process and that this update will fix the sales tax and “job” problems that I pointed out. And, the updates will be free to all users.

I’m encouraged by the work done so far and I hope that they continue to develop the features. I’m going to keep an eye on this product to see how it develops. This has the potential to be a very useful product for people who need to work out of their office.

Additional Information

Update at 4:00 PM on 3/7/2012: After I completed this initial article I spent more time looking through the product. I found that there was a lot more to this than I originally realized.

Near the bottom of the feature list on the right is a section marked “Confidential”. If you go there you will be asked to create a password and other security information. Once this is set up you can access a longer list of features, including viewiong of your chart of accounts, vendor list, purchase orders, bills and more. At this time the majority of these are “read only” features, apparently. You don’t have the ability to add purchase orders, for example. However, I suspect that this capability will be added in the future.

  • I remember, not all that long ago, how YOU (Charlie) use to almost brag about not having an ‘i’-anything. You have gone from Apple ‘rags’ to ‘riches’ so it seems.

    I still don’t have an ‘i’-anything,(my exposure to Apple other than working with QB for Mac clients, is one Granny Smith with a little salt each evening) but I just wish that everyone (including Intuit) had not forgotten the “Windows Mobile” platform which by the way, the new Windows-8 looks and acts ‘identical’ too.


    • You have a good memory, Murph, I did make the “I don’t own an iAnything” rant awhile ago. I’m learning to like the iPad mainly because I can leave it in the carryon bag when I go through airport security…

      I think that once Windows 8 gets established, and the “Metro” user interface is common between Windows phones, tablets and desktops, that it will take off. Software developers go where the market is, and Windows phones currently aren’t the biggest market.

    • Hi Murph, My client is using qbes 14.0 desktop and he wants to view transaction on his ipad and mobile tap.

      • It is getting tough for the desktop product, since Intuit is discontinuing the Sync Manager tool that makes it easier for web/mobile products to integrate. So if you look at a tool that says it works with QuickBooks, you first have to be sure they work with QuickBooks Desktop, then you have to ask if they use Sync Manager.

        I’m still looking at this area – my favorite one uses Sync Manager so it isn’t viable in the long term. One that is interesting, but probably works out to be expensive, might be SalesPad Mobile: http://www.salespad.net/Products/For-QuickBooks/SalesPad-Mobile-ERP

  • So glad to see your review of this app. I bought the .99 demo but have not installed with my company file yet. The sales tax is a definite problem for one of my companies and most of my customers. I hope that it gets some traction and they are able to build on what they have. So glad you did the “heavy lifting” testing for me. Now to pick which company file….like picking your favorite child!

    • We’ve just submitted an update to Apple to solve the Sales Tax problem. It also has Content Search.

      As far as company files go, I recommend using it for your own work. With the new ipad, you can dictate your comments in the description.

      • You can also changed company files anytime. Uninstall the sync engine on your PC, reinstall, and change the company file. It’ll flush out your iPad database before downloading anew.

    So the only “use” for this qbooks product is for customer transactions?

    You are going to love the ipad. At first, because I have a MacBook and an iphone, I didn’t think I had a need for one. Then I purchased a Kindle (waste of money, but I gave it to my Mom) and now recently purchased an ipad. Love it! It goes everywhere with me. Enjoy!

    • Good question, Lynda, and as I spend more time looking at this I learn more things.

      At first I thought it was just oriented towards sales transactions. Now that I look further, I see that there is a section that is, essentially, password protected that you can get into. Doesn’t show on my screen shots. Here you find information on vendors, bills, purchase orders, reports, A/P and more.

      I’m going to modify my article to point some of this out, it was an area I wasn’t aware of, and this makes the product go far beyond what we see in QuickBooks Connect.

    • Yes and no, Lynda. The biggest feedback we received was about the revenue side: creating transactions, receiving payment, viewing inventory from the iPad. Users can also record expenses which post back to QB.
      Vendor side transactions are visible under “Confidential” but as VIEW only.

      What is the use case you were trying to solve?

  • As you know I have ‘ranted’ about the apparently ‘dead in the water’ ShareBooks and how it wasn’t making appropriate use of Sybase database replication technology since Intuit was going to have people check-in and check-out the file. Apparently Qbooks is at least on the right path allowing two applications to have copies of the same file and each updating ‘their copy’ and then syncing the copies together (just the way Sybase designed it). Now if someone (who probably won’t be Intuit) will simply take this same technology and actually apply it to multiple desktop copies of QB…the world can be a “happy place”.

    I also suspect that the Qbooks people will get ‘called’ to link their iPad up with it’s natural ‘big brother’ (the Mac running QB for Mac) all the Appleites will be “happy” too.

    • Could you describe this a bit more, Stacy? Are we talking about users arriving at a location, entering their time of arrival and of departure, with comments, and sync:g back to QB for payroll? How would that use any of the features Charlie describes above. Or is it a stand alone, limited function app?

    • Thanks, Shannon. We’re getting great feedback from customers comparing this with the QuickBooks Connect and IPP subscription charges just for accessing the desktop. Furthermore, QBConnect forces you to use the latest version(s) but we sync all the way back to 2006.

  • Once again Charlie, thanks for keeping us all up with the play.
    Impressive and the pricing is very aggressive. I would think it would need to be a one-to-one relationship of QB data file to the client as surely with a sync solution if there were multiple users you introduce problems with time stamping document numbering and editing. In other words all the issues of contention in any sync solution for an accounting product. But looks a clean presentation and very useable.

    • Thanks, Graeme. Here is another example of a third-party addon developer who has developed their own database “sync” tool to manage access to QuickBooks, one that is superior to what Intuit has. Similar in many ways to what you have done with your own product, Xact.

    • Very insightful, Graeme. There is a many-to-one feature, though: multiple users accessing one QB file. As you rightly point out, we have to maintain the time stamps for individual fidelity.

  • It was thrilling to see an app for QB that would truly link to my desktop/laptop QB, so I downloaded the app straight away, but I have not received an email showing how to install the OpCenter. Do I need to do something further? Thanks for the update on this app.

      • Many thanks Charlie. It’s uploading now! As a Symantec user, my concern is with all the warnings about accessibility and no certificate recognition. I’ve always been a bit apprehensive about using the ‘Cloud’, for privacy reasons. Due to the sensitive material in the QuickBooks world, is this safe?

        • The certificate warnings and such are a separate issue from privacy and Cloud Computing.

          Code signing certificates (the warning you’ll get when you tell QuickBooks to let this in), and the issues with the installer being an MSI file, are things that you worry about when installing software that you aren’t sure about. If you run something from a web site you have been referred to and you aren’t sure that this is legit, or if the company is legit, these are the kinds of things that are red flags. However, if you trust the site and vendor, if you know that you are getting the product you want and from a reputable source, you can let that go. In my opinion this is a bit lazy and shows some lack of attention to details, as the developer COULD easily resolve these issues. If you see warnings like this, and you aren’t sure about the source of the program, then you should be worried. Of course, if you aren’t sure about the source of the program you shouldn’t be installing it ANYWAY! However, if you get this software from the locations I refer to, you are OK.

          Cloud/Privacy issues are something separate. Any time that your data is being sent to a “Cloud” service you should be concerned, or at least informed. Based on what Hart Singh tells me, your exposure to privacy issues are minimized here. It isn’t totally gone – there is no totally foolproof answer – but this system seems to be designed in a way that will minimize risk. Heck, you are more at risk for privacy issues if you use online banking (or, have your bank accounts at any bank that is on the Internet, which is all of them unfortunately).

          I’m not worried that these will be issues in this particular case, but as always I pay attention to what is going on.

          • There are two parts here, Charlie. The code signing certificate that shows you the .msi download is from a trusted source. We’ve fixed that.

            The other: QuickBooks not recognizing the publisher. This requires the code be signed (and it is!!) but since the code is in Java and uses a .dll which is not signed by Opcenter, this is an intractable problem.

    • When you sign up, you need to use your email as username so we have an email to send to. Apple’s policy requires us to NOT make emails mandatory, so we also make the download and instructions available at qbookscloud.com (last item on the left menu).

      But if you would like to receive the email, uninstall the app from your iPad and reinstall, this time signing up with your email as username.

  • Have you ever used a remote access such as gotomypc.com or logmein.com to access your home compuer while on vacation? If so, is that secure? I’m really not a techy person but I’m wondering if that would work to access QB’s. My understanding is you need to leave your home computer on and once installed, you can acces your computer as if you were sitting at your desk. Not just QB’s but anything on your computer. I have not verified this info but it is interesting in that it sounds really easy! Your thoughts on remore access?

    • Sue, it is as secure as your computer is at the office or home. That is, as you say, you have to leave that computer on. So anyone can walk up to it and use it. If you are OK with that, access is secure as long as you don’t use a too-easy password and you don’t provide anyone else with your login info.

      I have used both of those products successfully. Currently, I use LogMeIn Ignition on my iPad to access my office computer when on the road (even from Costa Rica!), and it works well for the kinds of things that you can do with it.

      I plan on writing more about this in the future.

  • That’s great, we work from our home so leaving the computer on is not an issue for us. We don’t have an iPad as yet but we plan to buy one soon. I appreciate your input and I look forward to hearing more in the future. Thank you so much!

    • If you do a lot of work remotely this way, a laptop with a regular keyboard and a larger screen will work better than an iPad. Or at least a keyboard that works with the iPad.

      The only reasons I’m using the iPad is that (1) I don’t do a lot of work remotely that way, (2) The iPad is smaller and easier to travel with (particularly in airports!). If I have to do a lot of work, the small size of the iPad screen can be really annoying.

  • I understand I can use many diff ways to acsess QB from my I-Pad and use it for sales and bids if i am outside the office. If for example I go to a customers house and give them a bid for parts labor and tax can i take a credit card payment if I have a reader that plugs in to my I-pad? I am going to get QB online plus with payroll and add the credit card add on

    This is a little ambiguous to me. Does this mean that my customer list wont sync, eg I can only use this product to write invoices going to John Doe but not Susie Q, even though both are both prior patrons of Jack’s Tiddlywinks? Or is it more a long the lines of I own (do the books for) two (or more) separate companies with two (or more) separate customer lists, and this app will only sync one of those lists?

    • Matthew, my apologies, that was a typo and I corrected it. What it is supposed to say is “You are limited to one company file”. You have to specify which QuickBooks company file that is on your computer that will by synced. If you have more than one company file, only one at a time. You can switch between them, but that is a bit tedious and is only done if you are making a big change in your operations.

  • Have purchased and installed the app, so far so good. In running tests to create new estimates from the IPAD am seeing taxable/tax data filed on estimate however tax setting on PC QB is set to no??? Why is tax info showing up on ipad estimate form and cannot save created estimate without adding tax…how can I fix this? When looking at Items list and Customers on QB on pc there is no tax related data or even fields to enter it into this two tables…help? Thanks in advance=)

    • Brian, we earlier had no sales tax at all and, as this blog evidences, was described as a serious shortcoming of the system! If you search for Sales Tax on this page, it is discussed 4 times. Our earlier solution: let QB do the math and apply the rules. Now, we do the math, show the taxability and calculate the tax. If that is 0, why should there be an issue? The ipad is for instantly sending out estimates and invoices and getting paid on the spot. But if you don’t HAVE to, you can always send the old format from QB, WITHOUT having to type data into QB when you get home.

  • I’m confused on the part that says you can only have one company file. If I’m doing the books for multiple companies with accountants version – will I not be able to switch between the company files? Or if I do, I have to unsync and resync which company I want to work with before I leave my computer? That will definitely be a deal breaker for me! Can you explain?!

    • Leila, my understanding of the initial version is that yes, if you want to work with multiple companies, you would have to unsync and resync every time that you want to switch. I think that they were looking into a solution for multiple files, but I can’t say if that is feasible, or has been done or not.

      This definately isn’t set up to be useful for ProAdvisors or people who work with multiple files.

    • James, to be honest, I’ve not used it lately. I don’t have a need for this in my own business. I don’t know a lot of people using it yet. I’ve not heard of any problems.

      Note that the cost is so low that your exposure here is limited – give it a try. Since it is read-only, you can’t hurt the QB database.

      My only concern is that if you have their sync engine, and Sync Manager, and a sync engine from several different other integrated products (since so many developers find that Intuit Sync Manager is a pain to deal with so they develop their own), that you might see some system performance issues at some point. But that is a stretch.

      • You actually spend only 99 cents to download the app, upload your own company data and do ALL possible transactions. The only limitation is that its for the first 10 customers and vendors (i.e. if you had just that many customers, you’d never need to buy the add-on).
        BTW, the in app purchase is not even visible until you’ve uploaded your own company file – a true “Test Drive the _____ “

  • I was trying to find an app that works with quickbooks properly. And it came to my attention to the left side header on the ipad there’s a mark there saying “Write – 49.99 and Read – 29.99” I’m just wondering as to what this means and will it cost a lot in order do this app with quickbooks?

    • Roscoe, as I mentioned in the “Price” section of the article, if you want to have the full features of the program you have to pay the price – a higher price for “write” capability or a lower price for just “read” capability. And, the last I looked, those were a one time fee (not an annual fee), so that makes it a very reasonable cost.

  • Do you have be in the same area as your desktop with your iPad to sync information back and fourth? Or can this happen anywhere as long as my iPad has a Internet connection?

  • Use Splashtop is the easiest and fastest remote desktop app. The performance is so good that there is zero lag and fully interactive. You have access to the full version of QuickBooks on your PC. Splashtop supports wake-on-lan so PC can also go to sleep. no more worry about sync’ing, compatibility issue, etc.. For bigger organization, Splashtop Business offers some cloud-based manageability features… audit trails, add/delete users, etc.

    • Mark, there are quite a few “remote access” apps for the iPad (and PC’s). I use TeamViewer on my iPad to access the PC. But that is a different experience than what we are talking about with qBooks. Having a “native app” on the iPad is quite often a much better experience than using remote access to the PC desktop. Performance is better, and you get to use the native features of the iPad.

      I use both approaches, depending on the task. Some things you just have to do on the desktop, not through the app

  • When Trying to send a QB Invoice from the coffee shop, while on the road, when I click Send Now, I get a Password Needed.

    Do I need Starbucks server info in Preferences/Send Forms?

    Is it not possible to send emails on the road?

    • Mary, if you can open an Internet connection with a browser first, so that you know you are connected to the Internet at that location, then try this, odds are that the password needed is the web mail password. However, you didn’t provide a lot of details so it is hard for me to say.

      Alternately, save the invoice as a PDF and then attach it to an email using your normal email program/service, rather than through QB itself.

  • Is qbooks still available? I checked itunes and did a google search and can’t find it. Is it under a different name now? The program sounds exactly like what I am looking for. Please let me know if it has been replaced or if there is another program that you would recommend. Thanks.

  • Though I am implementing quickbooks for last 10 year, however, recently I have successfully achieved the under reference subject. Sanerio was to use on multi user and on andriod phone. Teamweiver, ammyadmin and other remote tool have limitations for example those disturub the existing user. To resolve this I found a Patch of RDP(Remote Desktop) and configure the wonidow with different users and their rights. In next step I searched a software (VPN) …i.e. logme in hamachi etc(becuase I dont want to pay static ip cost). In the next I configure the same on the client computer and use andriod app (RDP) on modile. The user longin to window(Server)1st and open his user. As the window was in concurrent user login mode therefore every one was there. This is the cheapest solution. Additionally at another client I used static IP and that was also excellent.
    I am interested in webconnector and its actual usage in quickbooks.
